I think its "yearn" and daily record made an error!!
OP has all clues correct , just awaiting confirmation from Daily Decord that there is no mistake, anyway lie-in king seems to have come up with what could be the answer :)

Just checked scottish dictionary "yirn" means earn, yearn i'll maybe go with that!thanks ive really caused a stir!!
just received a call from the Daily Record, she said the answer to 78across is yawn, she cannot understand it herself going by the clue, apparently the crossword comes from down south, she did not compile it, she just looked at the solution.
Thanks Katburd. I was totally stuck on this one myself and even the crossword genius (Dad) was stumped. Would never have thought of yawn. Thanks for giving me the correct answer but I bet I still dont win it lol x
no bother, I suppose anybody could have phoned for the answer really, good luck :)
Thanks and good luck to you too x

your welcome :)
clues are spot on, as are letters. i think it could be yain, but like stated seems obscure. also 41d) could be pressed rather than pleaded, i have put a note in, as usual !!!
