Good basic manners from staff. A smile when you go through the door. Polite, friendly advice and information when requested. Staff being readily available but not overpowering. Staff identifiable. No snarling or ignoring!
I always feel uncomfortable if assistants pounce on me when I walk in, but I like them to be around if I need help. Otherwise, product knowledge, courtesy and efficiiency are all I require.
I agree with all of the above and would add that I like a place to be clean, bright and welcoming and I absolutely hate waiting to pay, or having to search for a till to pay at. I will always remember a store that goes out of its way to help, e.g. finding a product for me.
I remember being deeply impressed by a major store in the states which gives people with disabilities a pleasant, smiling personal shopper to go around with them and collect their goods from the shelves and help them pack and get goods into their cars. That kind of service not only helps the disabled shopper but leaves every shopper with the impression that the store really values them. A real win/win for all concerned service.
I'll pass it back to you - how do you like to be treated? What do you look for - and what's a real turn-off? Most of good customer service is treating others with the respect, consideration and attention to detail that we would like for ourselves. It's also the professionalism to cope with those who are rude, aggressive, ignorant and insulting - customer service should rise above personal feelings.
For me its the ability for the shop owner to give me advice and not be bothered if I buy stuff from them or not. If you go into a shop and they dont stock the particular band or type etc its always refreshing to see them suggest other stores.
