Both my laptop and TV have S Video sockets. If I connect an S Video cable between the two, does this mean I would be able to watch video that is on my laptop, on my TV, or is it not quite as simple as this? I am not sure if the S-Video cable would carry the audio.I have seen a cable that has S-Video connection on one end, and SCART on the other, would this do the trick?

It depends whether the s-video on your laptop is an 'out' or an in. If it's an 'out', you would be able to watch anything from your laptop on your tv (either through s-video connection or scart), if it's an 'in', it's for watching things on your laptop from an external source.
you wouldnt get sound though. you need extra cables to connect the audio from your video card to the tv. often the picture comes out black and white anyway. i use a s-video to scart cable lead. beautiful
