I read on the internet about how some Somali pirates tried to board a cruise ship. The article says "The crew used an on-board acoustic bang to repel the attackers who left without managing to board the liner." What is a 'on-board acoustic bang'? I'm intrigued!

Could be a version THIS
it's pretty much a machine that makes a really loud bang...sounds a bit silly but the americans are even developing a military model. some are directional and can be focused on targets. maybe they just thought 'holy **** they must have a really big gun' ?
