Yes, I've done it loads of times and you can find all you need to know on this site: www.dvdrhelp.com
Why do the addresses form links sometimes and not others? www.dvdrhelp.com
though you can't unless the mpeg or avi has subtitles aready embedded...
You require the http bit http://www.dvdrhelp.com ta daa!
smorodina -- to make a link you need to add the http:// to the front of the www.etcetc in order to make aclickable link. On this site, for some reason, it helps to leave several spaces either side of the link. Otherwise the code gets corrupted.
Lisaj - you can use vitualdub to add subtitles to an avi or mpeg, then make a vcd or data disk with permanent subtitles i.e. you can't switch them off. I do this a lot and details can be found on the site already mentioned.

Thanks very much all of you, the dvdrhelp site is great! I've spent a few hours tonight just looking round it. I've also found out how to include a link thrown in for good measure. Going to try burning some movies with subtitles now, I'll let you know how I get on.
