just curious really, but for the parents, if your adult children borrow money from you...not massive amounts, say from £30-50...do you expect it back?

would you loan it knowing you wouldnt get it back?
or do you always make sure its repaid?
do you let them pay back if they can?
or do you keep asking?

do you see it as just one of those things parents do, or do you think a debt is a debt...

(this is really just for general borrowing - NOT if you have a child with 'issues' or there is some kind of history of borrowing, stealing drugs etc)

cheers

I'm with boxy here, I hate owing money and it would weigh on my mind until I had paid it back - even a very small amount.
Why should my children go to a bank and pay interest when I will lend it to them for nothing. It works very well in my family and we all know where we stand. I can't afford to give them the money and my mother couldn't afford to give it to me or my brother either. If you pay it back you can ask again.
I suppose it depends on the family. My nephew owes me £500. Has done for while....I've never mentioned it to him, but he's mentioned it to me. When he's in a better position the money is to be repaid.
Doesn't tht cause some uncomfortable feeling though Ummmmm. Suppose he still hasn't mentioned the money in three years time. Lending money causes all manner of bad feeling in families and it's one of the main causes of family squabbles.

If it works in your family Ladybirder that fine but it doesn't in many as I said above.
No, not at all. He will pay it back....He's a had a hard time lately...when he's on his feet he can start paying at £50 a month like agreed. Until he's suitably on his feet, he doesn't have to pay.

If a family member, or friend, has popped round and needed money for taxi fare....I don't expect that back.
The day it causes trouble andy will be the day we stop it.

i think i would only expect it back of my son or daughter is if they made a habit of it and were forever asking me for cash...
or if it was a large amount because they wanted an item that they didnt need such as an iphone...

but if they needed it for say car insurance or a bill then id say that was more a need than a want.

i dont have any kids, and its me that sometimes borrows from my folks

my dad also will slip me a tenner while my mums not looking...he worries about me, like i wont eat properly etc ...aww
My mum used to give me loans of money as I was always broke - most of the 'loans' were never repaid. It was usually £30 - £60 at the end of the month. My dad used to moan about it. When my mum died my dad used to give me money. My dad is dead too now so no more loans.
I very seldom asked my parents for cash - but I used to have serious debt problems and they helped me out.
