The media player which is constantly recommended as the best available by BBC technology programmes is VLC:

The only alternative which I might consider is GOM:
http://www.gomlab.com/eng/GMP_download.html

If neither of those players can handle your DVDs (and you've tried several different DVDs) then the problem is either related to your operating system or to your hardware, not to your choice of media player.
