I'm puzzled by the fact that at a cost of billions and so many people having made a lucrative career out of this, that it would be exciting if it didn't exist!
'If they do discover the Higgs, it would be a triumph for the Standard Model, making it a complete theory.

If they do not, it would be an even more exciting outcome, according to Professor Tonelli.

"This would be the first time that we would have scientific evidence that this theory which has been so successful in the last 40 years must be definitely abandoned and we should look for another theory." '

@rov: How can the Higgs idea be classed as cranky when it is predicted by the standard model of particle physics which explains almost all the observed behaviour of the vast array of known particles and predicts the existence of the Higgs particle(s)?
The alternative solution as suggested above is based on a simple conjecture. He suggests the curvature of space is caused by the volume of the space object such as a planet instead of using the mass of a planet.

In simple terms if you placed a table tennis ball into a bath of liquid the water would deflect as much as a solid ball.

Maybe he has a point?
Perhaps there is a viscus sort of liquid surrounding all of us but we just can't see or feel it due to evolution.
