Merci Ecossais,
It pays to have a bilingual brain. Also impressed with the initial accented vowel, a computer skill I've yet to learn!
Cut and paste is wonderful
Or hold down 'Alt' + 130 (numeric keypad) = é ; Alt + 144 = É

Thanks to you both. My French grandsons will, I hope, be suitably impressed with my next franglaised email!
Or look to see if you have a key marked 'Alt Gr' to the right of the spacebar, hold down and type the letter.
This link shows various options, including all French accents, which you can get with ALT + numeric keypad. Make sure the NUM lock is on.

Thanks mamyalynne. Yet another mystery solved. I've been asking quite a few of my supposedly computer literate friends what the purpose of Alt Gr key is and nobody knew. It certainly is an extremely easy way of getting the accent.
Thanks too plautus for the irongeek link. I'm needing to update some passwords and it should. prove most helpful
The Alt Gr key is equivalent to pressing Ctrl and Alt together. If you press Ctrl Alt e you will get é.
