I have evidence of squirrels in my loft (droppings, chewed wood etc) and have had traps in there for a few days but haven't caught anything. Would they have vacated the premises purely from being disturbed. Also are they likely to return only in the winter. Do they just live in trees during the summer?

What does everyone have aganst squirrels in their homes?! Surely it's a blessing that they keep your loft acorn free.

Be glad it's not bats; it's illegal to evict bats and you can be evicted if you disturb them, and your property declared a sanctuary. Also be careful; squirrels are getting brave and have been known to attack; http://www.geocities.com/nickedemis/attack.html . Seriously though; http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/2415095

Squirrel, I used to think of your fellow rodents as sweet, ingenious cute little creatures that should be left to climb trees and appear in beer commercials to their hearts content. That is until I bought a flat and have to have it re-wired due to the little f'rs chewing through the cables. Now I just see them as rats with fluffy tails that should be used for rifle target practice. No sympathy for them anymore..... I can't believe it is illegal to kill rodents, never mind the damage they cause - lets just put them nicely in a cage and let them out in a nice wood somewhere. And if there are any animal rights folks reading.... I don't care. Howzat for some controversy ;o)
We have been told that a squirrel's nest in a loft can be a huge thing - made out of bits of this and that they find lying around and can be seriously expensive to remove (I know that sounds difficult to believe). Or squirrels get *much* braver and more aggressive in the mid to late spring (like now) - I assumed it was spring randiness.
