Lost photos

I seem to have made a mistake and have lost a lot of photos that I had just loaded onto my laptop.

I usually load pics on to an external memory but I have started using Picasa and this has happened before I had properly got used to using Picasa.

Can anyone let me know if and/or how I can get my pictures back please?

if you know the name/number of one of them, can you do a search? They might just have loaded into some folder you've forgotten about.

I thought I had named them jno but nothing comes up when I do a search unfortunately.

For anyone who might be able to help, interestingly (or not?!) I went to close Picasa but it says "closing Picasa will cancel unfinished operations". Might that suggest that the pics are still there somewhere? If not, should I click to ignore and close the programme?
