I have had an under active thyroid for some time and when I have a blood test, the results always come back "within normal limits". I still find it very difficult to lose weight and wonder whether a normal thyroid and one treated for under-activity, still work the same. Are there any views on that?

I ws diagnosed with the same in about 1988, my weight is erratic and I don't bother dieting as I burn alot off rushing about at work, but I do know that it is a challenge if you are not active
I presume that you are being treated for an underactive thyroid with eltroxin or similar and your repeat tests come back normal ?

If this is the case then treating an underactive thyroid doesn't automatically mean that you will lose weight because it has now been rectified with medication.....it won't happen.

By "work the same" do you mean that the end result of producing hormones is the same in both the treated underactive thyroid and a normal thyroid is the same.....YES it is.
Damn, I've put on an alarming amount of weight recently and was hoping to blame the old underactive thyroid, but I think it's my overeating! as I am being regulated by eurtirox!
nete...LOL....don't blame your thyroid, blame the paellas and wine.
Bloody hot here now.....30degC and warming up.

Ok so I take 125 mgs of Levothyroxine which should keep my hormone level correct. So what is it that stops me from losing weight at a reasonable rate when I consume between 1330 and 1400 calories a day. I know this to be so because I keep an on line diary which calculates calories for me. I am 66 years old and try to walk fairly regularly, this is the only exercise I get besides the usual day to day activities.
mintymow....don't blame your thyroid.....you are taking in more calories than you are burning.
As am I but I'm still blaming the old thyroid!
please go to this website, it explains everything, read it all..

I was in exactly your situation, but having read all the info on this site and changed medication, weight is starting to come off and I'm feeling so much better.
