why do many manufacturers insist on using

so much packaging, why do they put many food items in a bag, inside a plastic covering inside something else, perhaps not that way round. I don't usually buy supermarket sandwiches, but pressed for time i did, and i needed a crowbar to get it free. There are hygiene issues to consider i know, but come on. I read that one of the supermarket chains was going to put a single banana in a plastic covering, just barking.

i know, i bought a item which was in a factory moulded container, i tried to open it, assumed it had a corner to tear back, it didn't, i ended up using my heavy weight scissors, and brute force to get the stuff out, when i did, it was enclosed in a small equally heavy plastic wrapping. I think it took the best part of 30 minutes, why do they need to do this
