I have had some blood test back today & I have a high level of iron (which I already knew). My doctor has OK'd me to drink alcohol within the recommended guidelines & I only drink wine but which is better for me - white or red? Apparently one is an inhibitor of iron & the other does the opposite.....help!

tannin, as found in red wine and tea, slows down absorbtion of iron
In moderate amounts it doesn't matter a jot which wine you drink.
Though the red can stain your teeth and tongue.
Iron Absorption Enhancers:

Meat/fish/poultry
Fruits: Orange, Orange Juice, cantaloupe, strawberries, grapefruit etc
Vegetables: Broccoli, brussels sprouts, tomato, tomato juice, potato, green & red peppers
White wine

Iron Absorption Inhibitors:

Red Wine, Coffee & Tea
Vegetables: Spinach, chard, beet greens, rhubarb and sweet potato
Whole grains and bran
Soy products

So red if your iron is high, I guess red wine is best for you.
Sorry to repeat myself. I haven't been drinking myself - honest!
Has your doctor suggested you should donate blood ? Some people have far too much iron for their own good, and they can unload some of it by donating blood.

Yes, once I get some blood test results back, I will be seeing my doctor with the view to giving blood weekly
Vitamin C can promote the absorption of iron from food, Vitamin E can inhibit it.
