Hi was wondering if it was the done thing to cover a cake in butter icing, and then make a decorated shape in royal icing on the top.. or do you have to keep your icings separate.. (its just everyone in my family prefers butter icing.. and my son would like a scooby doo cake..!!)

You can't put royal icing over butter icing as it would slide off. why not put the butter icing as a filling for the cake if you are doing a sponge and then the royal or fondant icing over the top? You can buy pre-done fondant icing in the supermarket.

Actually you can stick fondant icing on butter icing quite successfully. Why not make up Scooby out of fondant and stick him on top.
