What......Eh?
It says in the article that it could be only 6,000 out of 8,000,000, so it's not that many - I can understand it, if you got your council house when you were starting out, then gradully did better for yourself until you are on the sort of salary most of us can only dream about.
It certainly does seem to be against the spirit of council housing being provided only for less well-off people though, particularly since people starting out now are likely to need several tens of thousands of pounds as deposit before they can think about buying their own place.
Is evicting rich tenants such a good idea? They might add something to an area, but the people who would probably replace them, single teenage mums, foreigners of various hues, and the like, would bring an area down.
Not that you'd label certain segments of society then Sandy.........

well WuTang, if you are still in the dark having read the link then you are beyond my help!

I think most of them will be as boxtops describes, started off in the council house, possibly after their parents, made good but never moved. So the government is now going to boot them out to make way for workshy scum, awesome and I'm a Tory as I'm sure many of you know!
If councils were forced to disclose their rent arrears figures some might change their minds on higher earners in council flats.
Even on 100k it'll be struggle to pay the going rates in some parts of London.
I don't mind them staying in the property as long as they pay the market rent. Then this applies to many more people earning way above the national average. Why should council housing automatically attract a subsidy ,which is paid for by low earners and pensioners?
Damn! Won't this Government ever leave me alone?
I'm not really sure how it all works but do they get subsidised by the normal tax payer for living in council accomodation, take up social housing allocation when others are denied as there isn't space for them etc...?
jenna Council houses have been built for the council by private builders for the past 100 years. The council then set the rent which is well below the market rate for similar privately built and rented out properties.
After WWII council houses were in the main the only houses that were available and millions were built. You had to apply for one and if allocated you paid the low set rent . You income was not a factor . As a result everyone was subsidised.
From the middle 50s private better equipped houses were being built and sold, and under Maggie Thatcher millions of council houses were sold to the sitting tenants but today many that remained are still rented out at a fraction of the normal market rents. This is particularly so where blocks of flats are concerned. Some of which are of a very high standard.
Today on the news the Unite Union boss , Crow, who earns £120k is living in one of the up market properties at a subsidised rent.
A more equitable way would be to charge the council rent in line with their earnings.
It shouldn't matter what they earn, and I'm not sure whats meant by subsidised rent. Our rent for the month isn't much different to what it costs to rent privately.
mines about the same but the only gain is it is a secure tenancy
The setting of council rents has always been a farce. A business man I know was renting a council house but wanted/needed an extra bedroom so he applied to the council who moved him to a bigger house, with a garage which he hadn't had before. . Much to his surprise the rent was lower ,when he asked why he was told " Oh all the houses in this road have a higher subsidy. " That was it , no explanation just a typical example of a state run organisation.
