geezer you are wrong they are paid for by anyone that pays tax in this country
that's what I said isn't it?

Anyway, those that are moaning about this aren't Tory voters anyway so that won't wash guys
Question Author
geezer in the future only the very rich tories will wash as much as water bills are set to rise, wonder who privatised that ?
Sit back, relax and sign on...........beautiful
like most of the privatisations they have been transformed in to profitable companies, needing no public funds, remember British Steel? Saves us all a fortune, what was income tax in 1979, 33% I think, now it's 20% Sorry, nationalised leviathans eating public money just to keep Labour voters happy is folly. When you pay a £ to a public sector worker, all of it came from the Private sector, yes you get some of that £ back in tax, whoopie! I'd rather keep the whole £.
I think the issue of sending jobs to India is not political. It`s all about money. We used to have a manufacturing industry in this country. We don`t any more due to cost (everything is made in India/China). Would you pay an extra £5 per month for your internet provider because they have a UK call centre or would you rather save £5 per month and speak to someone in Bangalore when you have an IT problem? These money saving issues are consumer driven. If there is no consumer demand, there is no provision. I heard (briefly) the council issue on Radio 2 this morning and someone phoned in who worked for a council and was responsible for Indian call centres. In the long term they were not as cost-effective as they first appeared. My personal opinion is that eventually there will be a backlash against foreign call centres and people will demand UK based consumer support. That starts with putting your money where your mouth is, rather than just moaning (IMO)

237SJ i do pay more than i should for my internet each month but that is my choice

when i have phoned for help it is great after a 20minute wait to try to speak to someone who gives no help and you have to ask to repeat what you have just said please.

give up take two pain killers

phone back and mess around again the next day hoping that you may get someone who will be able to help :)
It is a false economy. The council might save money, but it will cost the country more. The Council will be able to pay the worker in India less money but that will increase unemployment. That will cost the country more in an increased benefits bill, loss of tax revenues and less money in the local economy.
The aim of Councils or businesses is not to spend as little as pissible as Geezer claims, it is about getting the best value for the money you spend.
'Pissible' made me laugh, please read as 'possible'.
nothing new here, its been going on for ages, every time i ring an organisation i inevitably get someone in india, south africa, and beyond, quite frankly i am sick to death of this countrys attitude to its own workforce. Time to put a stop to it, we are now a joke, and its just not funny.

Why not source it out to Blatter nad the rest of his corrupt organisation!
having worked in a similar environment i do know how it works, and agree that there are people out there who think that its beneath them. But the point is why are we outsourcing call centre jobs overseas, if i have a query about my council, how the hell is someone in india or wherever going to know the location or type of problem. The language barrier is a major drawback, they may speak english, but the accents are often so heavy i often can't understand a word they say. Having to repeat the question endlessly usually has me banging the phone down, and just going to the council offices. The same can be said for many companies, my electricity/gas supplier and internet provider have the same problem. I dislike call centres at any rate, what was wrong with old system of a real person at the end of a phone, who you could refer back to if the problem doesn't get sorted.

Dr Filth, this is just a logical progression of your glorious Labour government's globalisation policy, encouraging immigration and the sell off of British businesses.

Santander became one of our biggest banks by a Spanish tax fiddle (for which they were later fined by the EU!) What did Gordon do about it - nothing.

Our steel industry is Indian owned, so where do the closures take place - not in India!!

Most of our Utilities became foreign owned on the Labour government's watch.

EDF who are flying the British flag for the Olympics are Electricite de France, for heaven's sake. When we import fuel from a foreign parent company, the price we have to pay is set over there... think about it.
Blame the Brit Raj for teaching them english
redhelen, only once calling a long list of companies using the 20 options scenario, and then having phone go dead, and having to go through the whole wretched process again, It did happen once, i got a geordie guy on the phone, who was a lovely guy but i did ask him to repeat what he was saying endless times. So why employ anyone who hasn't got a reasonably understandable voice on the phone, whether in india or UK.
You run a call centre so perhaps you speak from a position of defence. I on the other hand don't like talking to machines, nor to someone with a prepared script, and if its a person from india that i can't understand, or in UK then i tend to try and take my business elsewhere. But if councils have to use them, then make them UK based.

venator i think you will find the selling of all things British started under maggie have a read about British Steel the tories were in power in those days

the modern dark ages
A friend of mine...working in the public sector has been on the sick ..on full pay since xmas....returned to work last week to be told to take 30 days off to catch up with holidays. You couldnt make it up!!
Does this mean we are due to get another call centre someone ringing us "Yellow this is Brian from Mumbai" Me = "sorry I can't hear you, could you say that again? " etc etc....How much do these telephone calls cost?. I'm also worried that our medical records are to be dealt with in India too.
