It's so sad that the English pub is being 'pushed ' out of existence

In 1974,whilst a student at Durham studying Russian, I was privileged to read on the toilet wall, "Mike is the greatest cunning linguist in this university"
Thanks, puss ;-)
the first time I ever went to Newcastle I went into a pub and tried to buy a bottle of Newcastle Brown. I was told that they didn't sell it as they 'had no call for it'!

Perhaps Newcastle Brown is like Manchester United supporters? i.e. found everywhere in the world apart from the city which bears their name?
Mark, get him to buy the drinks then!
Mike. Thankyou . Would love to go to my local to meet new people but without another person to go with I am stymied. Just have to sit at home and drink alone.
Chris, it wasn't the Egypt Cottage, was it...? ;-) You'd have been better off asking for a campari and soda in there... ;-)
Newcastle Brown Ale is no longer the drink it was, so has declined in popularity. At one time the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle had a ward dedicated to those with addiction problems, popularly known as The Broon Ale Ward.
It was many, many years ago, Mark, so I've no idea what the pub was called.

At least it was better than the first time I ever went to Birmingham. I went into a pub but the bar staff seemed to be deliberately ignoring me. Eventually the landlord tapped me on the shoulder and told me "Look, we don't want any trouble. You know that you're barred, so just leave quietly"! Apparently I'd got a double!
The Egypt Cottage. Right opposite the Tyne Tees TV Studios.
Mike, I was born in the RVI. I'm sure there is no nexus.

Looks like the non smokers with big mouths have changed their minds

there may be something in what you say there Jack
I feel sorry for some of the old folk near me. Most of the old ones stopped going into the club and they will spend the last years of their lifes stuck alone at home.

People may look at the positive image that the air is clean in the club now.

They may also pick any seat they want as the club is now empty and facing closure.
Question Author
as a non smoker it never bothered me Jack, maybe because I can't stand the Holy Joe's who want to push their ideals at you, I did smoke myself but I chose to give it up, my choice though,
yes, like here, the club was a spot where old people could go and enjoy a bit of Social life, play a game of Bingo and such
