Vanish is an oxygen-based bleach for removing stains. You need a solvent to dissolve grease- Stain Devils do one for grease or you could use Sticky Stuff remover; the solvent in that dissolves most things!
An old remedy used to be iron brown paper over the fabric, this is supposed to absorb the grease.
I always spray with vanish before I put clothes in the machine, I never have a problem with it.
I use Stain Devils for anything like grease, spice stains etc. Available from the supermarket.
Try neat washing machine 'liquid' directly on the stain before putting in the washing machine.
Ordinary cheap washing up liquid rubbed into the stain before washing works well. Don't use it on delicates though.
Just feed the kids on dry bread - nothing else.
For car grease I use waterless hand cleaner as pretreatment.
What woofgang said works every time for me, i've even used it to get engine oil out of a shirt and jeans before.
beckmanns stain slayer little aerosol orange oil based its brilliant

change to Shout but in the plastic spray bottle not the can its the only thing that works for me, agree Vanish is useless, you might have to Google to find a stockist as it is gradually disappearing from the supermarket shelves, great with grass stains too.
