Ah, thank you, In A Pickle.  I thought I hadn't seen that meeting in an Elizabeth I epic before, like you say shame when they bend the truth.  Still I quite enjoyed the production - well when you compare it to most of the drivel we are offered.... thanks again for enlightening me.
last time Elizabeth met Mary was in the Vanessa Redgrave/Glenda Jackson movie in the 1970s. That was wrong too.
exactly right in a pickle.. as well acted as it undoubtedly was..it was full of inaccuracies and those two were belters..
Whilst historically incorrect I must say that it is a travesty to say it was badly acted. Helen Mirren's performance was mesmerising
The idea of Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots meeting isn't new. German playwright Friedrich Schiller included this in his play Maria Stuart, first produced in 1800

For some reason film makers seem to delight in making up meetings between famous people that never happened. In Khartoum, Charlton Heston (Gordon) slips out into the desert to have a secret confab with the Mahdi (Lawrence Olivier). In Braveheart, Wallace not only has a secret meeting with Edward the Second's missus but has knowledge of her in a biblical sense. All very entertaining, but complete fabrications.
