By demonstrating to them that you are a trustworthy person. It does depend on the circumstances, too.

I think consistency in behaviour is important. If you don't ever do anything that upsets and phases them, and you are always the same in that respect - they can predict how you will act most of the time, and that breeds security and leads to trust. I think.

The way I see it is, to GAIN someone's trust and respect, you never have to let them down in the first place, as generally covered by the above replies.
However, to RE-GAIN someone's trust (after letting them down) is a difficult and different matter altogether.

Be consistent. It is not necessary to like someone before you trust them.
