When is the best time to prune a lilac tree
I know it's too late now but just wondered when the best time would be

Straight after this years flowers have faded. It will set it's new buds for next year after it flowers this year so if you leave it too long after you may end up chopping off all next years potential flowers.
The best thing for lilac trees is to make bunches and bunches of flowers as they're flowering.

Yes but don't they die quickly in vases?
The ones I've cut have all died very quickly
