If you search back on Home and Garden (submit a question and put Dyson in the title and ? in the type your answer here box) you will find all the comments and discussions about Dysons.   Personally I think they are like a holiday romance, you are in love with them for a while and then the novelty soon wears off - I would not have another one (Dyson that is!)
PS   I love my Miele vacuum, very hardy and still going strong after many years.
Sorry ? in the 'what is your question' box I meant

Dysons are very good.  At first!  After about a year they start to lose their suck, and you will have to clean out the filter.  Don't get sucked in (sorry about the pun!) to their claim of "No loss of suction ever, no never, not a jot"  because that is simply not true!  Upright Dysons do however have a very good "on board" tool arrangement, meaning you dont keep having to attach hoses all the time.

I/We at the moment are using a "Vax Big Bubble", which is very powerful, light, and reasonably cheap at less than half the price of the Dyson, but the tools are a bit of a pain as you have to keep connecting them before use!

Before you spend any money try a reveiw site such as this to help you decide:- http://www.reviewcentre.com/ , you never know it could save you time and money!

I think the most highly rated vacuum cleaner at the moment is "Henry", but it's not an upright.  Hope this helps.

as a cleaner for many years i have used a few different hoovers i think dysons are very good at first but i have many probs with them henry is good but i would say the best one i have used is the miele.

I had a Dyson that broke very quickly after we got it. It sucked well, but was built badly.

I think when Which magazine did a quality check on vacuum cleaners Dyson came out one of the worst.

I would suggest you do NOT by a Dyson.

I've had a Dyson DC07 Animal for coming up to 3 years. It's used in a big house everyday with no problems. It's by far the best I've had.  Perhaps they are getting better all the time.  Of course, it could just be the luck of the draw.
I've got a dyson and wouldn't have another one, give me a cylinder aswell anytime. I'm going for a miele next time (sounds as though it will be a good choice).
i have a dyson and have had it for several years. they are fab and would never have anything else. they have no bag filters and the filter thing is so easy to clean and everything is colour coded so if you get a block you can see which bits have to come off and go back on again. they have inbuild tools. they suck extremely well as long as they are looked after as with anything. having said that the only complaint i have is that mine is quite heavy when i have to carry it upstairs but apart from that. FAB.
I had a Dyson but it was a short lived affair .too heavy and cumbersome. When you empty the cylinder half the muck ends up back where you got it from and you need to be a contortionist to clean the stairs with it.I now have a Miele cat and dog.The best vacuum cleaner ever.

Thank you to every one for answering my query, have only just got a chance to reply. Will investigate the miele hoover

Miele are very very good and reliable vacuum cleaners.

If you want an upright then I would recommend SEBO..Suitable for all floor types and comes in different model specifications but both Miele and Sebo are not cheap...

You mention Dyson ..is that because you want a bagless? The two above need bags.

Sad to say I would not touch an actual HOOVER nor a Dyson come to that.

After a number of vacuum cleaners over the years thought bagless Dyson would be the answer. Sadly have been dissapointed. Find it over plasticy,  awkward to use especially hose , cable and suspect there must be other simpler cleaners worth considering. I'd look at all options before buying.

Dysons are crap!  I have a henry-hes great.
