My youngest son (who, according to the speech therapists, can't talk, as opposed to won't talk) had his first proper speech therapy session today. It went really well and he seemed to achieve loads in 3/4 of an hour. He picked the signing up really quickly (mainly animals and vehicles today plus mummy and daddy) and made the same 'noise' each time he signed each of them (apparently that's progress).

Ahhh, that's good news. You must be really pleased. Well done little Sherrard.
good news sherr.
I am really pleased to hear this sherrard but do the medical people concur that he cant rather than wont talk?
speech therapy can be amazing. I hope your son comes on in leaps and bounds :o)

Hi Alex - apparently his talking switch is not switched on for some reason (but they don't know why not). He is trying to talk but just can't do it - it just sounds like a series of grunts (but I know what he is trying to say). His hearing is fine (been discharged by the hearing people), he has no problems eating or drinking (which if he did could affect his ability to speak). They think by having signs to attach words to it will help him speak.
Do the other kids 'do the talking' for him? Knew a little boy whose older sister had him 'figured out' - he didn't start talking until she went to school.

Hi popsiq - the others don't speak for him and he is already making good progress after only one speech therapy session. Apparently he actually cannot talk as opposed to won't talk.
