Hi.About a month ago I caught some sort of a bug that knocked me for six for a few days..no energy ..no appetite.generally feeling dreadful heavy chest cough and partial deafness in one ear. I seemed to rally from the bug was/am left with the cough and slight deafness. I went to my local clinic and was seen by the nurse practiceoner who said I had a chest infection which was also affecting my hearing; she put me on a 7 day course of antibiotics which finished last friday 11/03/2011. The cough has subsided quite a lot and my hearing has returned about 80% but I still feel as if I have cotton wool in my ears and I have a constant ssssshhh sound in the background which makes individual conversations very difficult.I have made an appointment to see a doctor later this week to see if maybe I need more antibiotics or have I got the dreaded tinnitus?!!!.Sorry for such a long post but I really appreciate your answers.S.O.G

The ear is the key to this.
If the noise in the background is due to fluid in the ears, which I suspect it may well be, then, nose spray or decongestant tablets will clear up your ear problems within a week.

No, you haven´t got the dreaded "tinnitus" which is a symptom and not a disease....but I know what you mean.

Sqad.I saw a GP at my local clinic yesterday 17/03/11 and explained my problem to him. He checked my chest and ears and said he could not see any problems in my ears and that my chest sounded clear even though I have still got an irritating cough. However he has given me another seven day course of antibiotics and says hopefully this should clear everything up he didn't say anything about nasal spray or decongestant tablets and I didn't suggest them to him so I guess I will have to see how things go. Thanks again for your help. ATB...S.OG
I have had tinnitus for 10 years sog and you would know it if you had, its bloody awful.
s.a.g....thanks for the update.
trt: sog hears noises that are not real but "internally generated". So, by definition, he has tinnitus.
