Can anybody give me an idiots guide to Kindle ? I am not sure how books appear on it. Am I right in thinking that you have to pay for all the books, and they only come from Amazon ?
Or can you get free downloads, from anywhere else ? I wouldn't mind giving it a go but not if its going to cost me a fortune every time I want to read something. I have given up (nearly) buying books because I am now retired, on quite a small pension, so I don't really have the cash anymore. Books are so expensive these days, even paperbacks.

Thank god for the local Library, while we still have one 1

You can get free books from Amazon too. In the search engine just type in "free ebooks", look to see what you want, plug in your kindle and hit the "download" button, it really is that simple.

Don't give up on your Kindle yet, I love mine, infact id rescue that from a house fire over the dog ;-)

Thanks everybody ! What a wonderful resource the Answer Bank is ! So quick !
Yes, you do have to buy books - but only once. Once they are downloaded to your Kindle you are reading them from there

Also (although I have not tested this yet) it says that if you accidentally delete a book after buying it, you can download it again FOR FREE

You can also eMail documents (like pdfs) to your Kindle for free

I'm loving mine already
