a half litre of water would be 500g exactly excluding the container and neglecting stuff disolved in the water.

You could weigh the container, then reset the scales with the container still in place. If you now measure half a litre of fresh water into the container, the scales would read 500g.

(Just for fun) you would require any of these:

1.40 in copper coins (1p & 2p)
7.70 in milled cupro-nickel (5p & 10p)
20.00 in 20p coins
31.00 in 50p   "
53.00 in 1     "
84.00 in 2     "

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_coinage

1p and 2p are 3.56g and 7.12g
5p and 10p are 3.20g and 6.40g (I think)
20p is 5.00g (I think)

Of course, if you want to go back to Imperial measures, three old pennies weigh exactly one ounce.  Which means (by amazing arithmetic ability) that 48 of them wheigh one pound!  (=454grams).       I have an old spring balance which is calibrated in ounces, divided into quarters on one side of the scale, and thirds on the other.

What about a 500g pack of butter or the like?. Failing that, if you pour 500ml of water into one of those flimsy plastic piece bags and tie it up, the weight of the bag will be virtually nothing.

that is how much they weight
