they asked me to write it as they are a slow typist and unsure of their English. It is going to be 'from' them, Mattk
Agree with Andy, when people mention letters they think they need to be some 18th Century epic, all you need are a few lines.

Hello here is the sample of a thank you letter,
Not specifically like the one you asked but you can find some idea on how to make one.

Dear Mr. Johnson,

I am writing you this letter to personally thank you for being so understanding when I asked for urgent leave to care for my mother after she suffered her fall last week.

I have always been a loyal employee to your company, and pride myself on my dedication to my position as deputy Sales Manager within your branch. I wish to remain working for you for many years to come, and am arranging for my sister to come and stay next week so that I can return to work, all be it part time to start with.

Once again, thank you for being so understanding, and allowing me to take leave at the shortest of notice, I will keep you informed, but hope to be able to return on Monday morning to work, and to talk to you about the possibility of working part time for a few weeks until my mother fully recovers,

Yours faithfully,
