I have a Hewlett Packard Compaq610 laptop running Windows 7 which has worked fine for the last 12 months.

I feed the audio output through an external amp from the mini jack headphone socket. At first the audio comes through the socket without probelms but just recently, and for no apparent reason, the output has started to automatically switch to the internal speakers completely isolating the headphone socket. The only way I can get the audio to play through the headphone socket after it has decided to change is to reboot the laptop.

I have restored the computer to a point some 2 weeks earlier before it started to happen and this has not solved the problem.

Any suggestions why this has started to happen?

Thanks in advance,
Henry

In the sound properties there may well be a 'headphone detection' option. If you can find it, have a play around with that.
Either that or check the settings in the sound mixer panel (double click speaker icon in system tray)
