For the attention of Chuck and Albags. Slow boot up speed - again

Thanks for all your comments yesterday. Unfortunately I have not noticed any improvement in my boot up speed, nor can I get into Event Log. However, when I look under the Services tab in msconfig I see that there are literally dozens of items shown. Some have the Status "Running" and the others "Stopped".

Do I need any / all of these items that are "Running" or can I "Disable All", just to see what happens - or am I likely to mess something up?

What did HijackThis say?
(Run and save a log file)

As per my post on Page 2 of yesterday's (timed at 14:09):

I've just run a HijackThis scan and now have a screen and a half of results. There are prefixes R0, R1, R3, F2, 01, 02, 03, 04, 08, 09, 015 and 023. Many of the entries have (File Missing) at the side of them.
What exactly am I looking for?
Thanks and regards
It would be a really bad idea to disable all the services in msconfig.

In my opinion, due to the fact that you seem to have multiple issues at the same time I would actually recommend that you back up all your user data and go for a nice, fresh, clean reinstall of windows (which I believe somebody else suggested to you).

You have to weigh up the amount of time you'll spend on trying to diagnose multiple problems (especially if you're not 100% sure what you are doing) against the couple of hours it would take to reinstall windows. and a reinstall really is the best way to ensure you've got a nice clean sreamlined system.

Thanks again for your help, Chuck. I think I've come to the conclusion that a complete reinstall is the way to go. I just hope that I remember everything that I've got on my machine when I come to copy it all onto a CD / Memory card / Stick before wiping.
Use this to look at MSConfog entries

It could be fixed .. but quite time-consuming.
You have some system files missing there .. but they could be infected or modified. On delete Windows could restore them.
Back up everything first then play with HijackThis on the filemissing entries.
Disable System Restore and do a full scan after rebooting.
You may need to restore files to Windows ... Know how to do it?

Thank you very much, Albags and Chuck, for your time and patience in trying to help me. As you intimate, I am not 100% sure of what I am doing with regard to restoring items to Windows. I think it would probably be wise for me to back up everything I've got and do a complete reinstall of Windows.
I am reasonably confident in my ability to do this as I managed to take everything off my old Win98 system and put it on here a couple of years ago.
I shall proceed slowly!
Thanks again for your efforts. I'll let you know when (if?) I get up and running again.
Regards
