And I like Mr Chiles as well. Grumpy bugger, but I like him and I wouldn't mind giving him a cuddle!! In the minority I would think.

Yes he was, Vibes.
I preferred Lenny Henry when he was acting in that sit-com because he was more interesting and it worked better for him. he was never funny being a stand up ot impressionist, except on New Faces he was quite good then
I saw Lenny Henry live in the mid 80s - he did a very good show.

Al Murray is a mate of mine, and TOTALLY unlike his Pub Landlord persona. An extremely erudite, cultured and educated man - his "Road to Berlin" series shows his true personality and character.
MarkRae makes a valid point - some people really do not know the difference between a comedy construct and the individual behind it.

I believe that is true of Bob Monkhouse who was apparently a charming and caring man offscreen, and played up to his 'smarmy' image which hid what a seriously talented comedian and compere he was.

A friend of mine saw him play a night-club for mixed audiences, and then the same club for 'gentlemen' and the act was completely different - tailored to each audience, and very successful in both cases.
Just LOVED bob Monkhouse !!
