As I am having difficulty with my baby sleeping at the moment a friend jokingly told me to give him some medised as it contains a sedative. I have actually used it before when my daughter was a toddler (but not to get her to sleep, never needed to) and forgotten about it but I know it used to be from 3mths but now its 6yrs! Why the big age change? And should I consider it?!

tigwig if you can manage without, then do try, parenting is hard and sometimes we look out for an easy route as we get tired and sometimes exhausted but all these things settle in time. Keep calm with little Tig and all will be well.

Sqad, surely you did not really think I was serious LOL Oh well blown my chances once again.

pinki...you are entitled to your opinion.

I agree with Pinki....the thought of it is disgraceful. He's a baby For Funks Sake....you don't sedate poorly baby's just because they have woke up 3 nights on the trot.

That's what it comes down to Tigs....he's bothered you 3 nights on the trot. Shame.

i too gave my eldest phenergan on a fairly regular basis when he was somewhere between 18 months and 2 years, as did many of my friends. it was a very common practice and whilst i'm not advocating anyone doing it these days, it was certainly something which wasn't frowned on way back then. times change.

I'll be honest I am undecided what to do. I have the bottle now so could use it but part of me thinks it might be wrong. I suppose in black and white it does sound like I'm only considering it to make my life easy and if I'm harsh with myself then maybe I am but in reality I just want to get my baby back in his normal routine and if using this for 1-2 nights helps him is that so wrong? I guess a baby sleeping in mums bed doesnt sound like a big deal for many of you but I cant stand it! He is all over the place, which means he could easily fall out and constantly shuffles and wakes on and off throughout the night meaning neither of us sleep much. I do have to work 10hrs a day as a childminder and trust me this isnt easy when you are completely knackered. I dont want to come across as a horrible selfish mum who puts my needs first but I am completely exhausted and hearing how many people have used this stuff with no harm it is tempting. Is it so wrong to temporarily use something like this? I wouldnt dream of doing it everyday just for the sake of it but I do think this is a different scenario. He has also developed a runny nose and has his fingers in his mouth so maybe getting more teeth. Medised contains paracetamol so surely that would help him too?
tigwig, sounds like you're a really good, sensible mum so i would just go with what you personally feel is the right thing for you and your baby. we're all different and can only give our opinions, you know what's best for yourself, doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.whatever you decide will be fine :o)
tigwig ;-) that description fits the lifestyle of 90%of mothers.

We ALL understand how you feel.....you have had honest, informed and practical advice from posters and it is your call

Pinki and ummmm have valid and well thought out opinions.

Now....do what you think.....whatever you do will be the right decision.

Thankyou, I dont know what to do for the best now! I will discuss it with my other half when he gets home. Bet if I do give him it it wont bloody do a thing anyway.
I know zilch about babies but for what it`s worth it sounds like he`s suffering from a classic case of jet lag - it`s always worse going from west to east. With a time change of 5 hours an adult would be assumed to need 2 local nights to acclimatise and it`s always going to be harder for a baby with their unusual sleep patterns. Hopefully he`ll settle down again soon.
I agree with ummmm and pinki I'm afraid. Probably better to let it run its course and since baby can't tell you somethings wrong in normal language then crying is the only recourse he has and you'll be effectively cutting off his communication method. Perhaps you could take a day off child minding instead, everyone is sick once in a while so while inconveinienced, I'm sure your clients would understand.
It was common practice for Victorian nursemaids to dip babies' dummies in laudanum (a derivative of opium) to keep them quiet.
I wouldn't give it to any of mine, especially as it's only been three nights. You are probably more tired than usual because of your own jet-lag so you both need time to get back into your routines.
I have no children - it takes me all my time to look after myself.

tigwig - I do know when it comes to bringing up children you will never get it 'right'. You can't win - it starts off with the debate over breastfeeding, working/non working mothers etc.

I have to admit that I take the stuff that you are talking about (Phenergan) and it isn't heavy duty stuff. As a one-off (Sqad drugging the kids so as to shut them off when driving) it is ideal.

If you do decide to give junior a dose of Medised don't feel guilty or feel that you are a bad mother because other people can cope.

It may be that he will go to sleep no problem tonight - which would be great.

I am SO glad that I only have my cats.

Well I did give him a spoonful of medised last night but it made no difference so its obviously not that strong a sedative. My intention was not to drug him to sleep but to try something that may have helped him back into his usual sleep pattern but this didnt work so I will just have to give it time. I will not be trying stronger sedatives as that would not be the right thing to do in this scenario but after alot of thought I decided the medised was worth a go.
