Why do the amount of daylight get shorter and longer at different times of the year?

The Earth's axis is tilted 23.5 degrees from the vertical this means as it orbits the sun, the half of the Earth with daylight is ever changing. The amount of daylight depends on latitude. For example, anywhere north of the arctic will have 6 months daylight followed 6 months darkness.
