You can´t...............you are either infected now or not.
It's going to be difficult...obviously try not to be coughed or sneezed at...wash your hands regularly with anti-bac stuff...lots of fluids...but I'm afraid you'll probably get it!
Sorry!
Take Echinacea - I'm not saying it will stop you getting the cold but it boosts the imune system and helps you fight it. I do find that if I take it early enough I don't get the cold............It could be that I wouldn't any way but I think it's worth a try.
JimJools......no it doesnt boost the immune system....there is no medical evidence to support this........unless you can supply a link.
theres that kleenex nasal spray stuff you might try...that at least (allegedly) is research evidence supported
My BF, who is a right hypochondriac, swear by Lysine - he says they keep his cold sores at bay and boost his immune system. He's been taking them for around 9 months now & has not had his usual round of herpes (oral.....), colds or sore throats.
It helps in the production of essential amino acids or something - he initially took them for joint protection - the other benefits he discovered accidentally. Though don't take his word as gospel - he has some strange health beliefs....!

I started on them a month ago. I have just developed a cold sore..... :-(
I agree with trying to boost the immune system. Try a combination of Vitamin C, zinc, garlic and echinacea ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6231190.stm ) to do this.

Also keep washing/disinfecting your hands if you come in contact with whatever this person has been touching
Even doctors say most things you buy as a cure or preventative are a useless waste of money.

Impeccable research units and large series.

These answers will not help our OP........read his question again.
There may not be any medical evidence squad - But I find it works for me. I did say that it may be that I wouldn't have got the cold anyway. I used to always get lots of colds but since I've started taking Echinacea I've found I don't get anywhere as many. Even when hubby has a cold I rarely get it now if I start taking Echinacea. So I don't know what the answer is but it seems to work for me.
Jim.......fair enough, that is the bottom line.

However our OP wanted something more ..."prompt".........;-)
Echinacea always works for me but you have to take it at the First Sign of being near someone coughing, sneezing etc. or when you just feel the start of a cold or sore throat, otherwise it will be too late. Take two the first day and one every day for a week. You can't take them all the time. Might not work for everyone but it seems to for me, nine times out of ten.
I agree with Smurfchops and JimJools, always works for us too!
make sure you use an antibacterial spray or wipe on anything you share - germs are spread on dirty hands too.
