From the JanSport website:
"You may wash your JanSport with water and a mild soap (when washing your bag, if your bag has a leather-covered base, protect it from getting wet). Do not use a washing machine to wash your JanSport as it may harm your bag, which will not be covered by our guarantee. After washing your JanSport, hang it up to dry (do not machine dry)."

I must say that my son has had his jansport bag for3 years now, has never asked for a new one (unllike my daughter who needs a new one every September) it looks great I have only really hand washed it once or give it a good brush. It's so strong it might make a washing machine, but to be honest it would be a shame to weaken it. My Nephew has had his from year 6 to uni!
