The electricity that comes out of my wall sockets does so at 240 volts AC. However according to the embossed wording on my main fuse, it comes into my house at 415 volts. Where and how does it turn into 240 volts.

If you have 3 fuses then Doc is correct ..however if you only have 1 main fuse then the supply will be nominal 230v..the fuse may indicate that it could be used on a 415v supply
ps Doc...where does the GREEN phase come from?
Pre harmonisation...Red L1 Yellow L2 Blue L3...Black...N. Green and Yellow striped..Earth.
Harmonised. (now).Brown L1..Black L2.. Grey L3.. Blue N...Green and yellow ..Earth.

It is actually illegal to put power onto a green wire. Outside of an appliance, purple wires are not allowed for power either.

They dumped the red wire for the harmonised system due to red/green colourblindness. I knew a colourblind electrician once. They sacked him when they found out.
