How difficult is it for a relatively naive young man to add an extra electrical output socket to an already wired up garage?

Not difficult to get it wrong. If, as you say, you are naive then get an expert in. That will also mean that the work will be certified and so pose no problems when you come to sell the house or return it to your landlord.

By using a qualified electrician you know that they will use the right materials and that the circuit will not pose a threat to life or a fire hazard. Samll price to pay for peace of mind for you and your family (or other house inhabitants).

yea, get a recommendation from a friend for a good electrician, and get it done professionally.

if you get something wrong you could end up with hair like Einstein.
If you haven't an answer youself for this question get someone else in. the consiqences of getting it wrong could kill you.

Hi Trillipse - The fact you're asking this question to me is an indication that the person in question should not be tackling the job.

Personally, I think it is very easy. It is not voodoo, it is not diffcult.

Get yourself a good DIY book from the library (I recommend Collins). It explains it all in there in very easy step by step instructions. Make sure that you understand fully, what it is saying before you attempt anything and make sure that you have the electricity off before starting.

So long as you fully understand wat you are doing, it really is not difficult.

If you do not understand the book, please get in an electirican.

Since it is not outside, and not in a bathroom or kitchen you can legally carry out this work yourself.

It is quite easy if you are sensible about it (i.e. turning off all power unti the job is complete and following instructions carefully etc).

As others have said, it's very easy to do it right, and just as easy to do it wrong.  It could also be very illegal if you don't get it approved by a qualified electrician.
Play safe and get professional help if you are as naive as you say.  Electricity can inflict serious damage in the wrong hands.
As a qualified electrician. it is not illegal to carry out the work yourself. unfortunately any muppet with a screw driver and DIY book can do his/her own electrics. i advise you like the rest of these fine people to get a professional in to do the job. if it is just one extra socket you are needing it shouldn't cost the earth.
