I recently bought my first diesel powered car and have found that at about one in every ten filling station pumps I get diesel on my hands. I used petrol pumps from the time that they became self service and never got petrol on my hands. Why is this?

The only thing to use is the protective plastic gloves that are (usually) provided.  Try to avoid "heavy goods" pumps, that truck drivers use, the pump handles are usually filthy, as is the surrounding area!
Pretend you are disbaled. Hoot the horn and someone will come out and serve you. You don't have to display a badge. Sounds offish, but why not?
