Read the headlines provided by BBC radio Leicester.

/// Thousands unite in Leicester after EDL protest ///

/// Thousands of people showed their opposition to an English Defence League (EDL) protest in Leicester by holding a festival of peace in the city ///.

Since both the EDL and the UAF held rallies in the city, why was it thousands of people showed their opposition only to the EDL?

Perhaps another group should be enlisted, to protest against the 'Far Left' UAF, but then they would in turn be outlawed and called fascists etc.

It made me smile when I saw that the the City Council had staged a propaganda show on Sunday.

/// Groups from across the city came together on Sunday to hold the We Are One Leicester Peace Festival ///

Don't they realise people will flock to any event that provides a show with live music. musician Billy Bragg.said "I'm here because I am a patriot. I have come to Leicester because I care about this great, multicultural city and I am proud to be English".

I wonder how much the council paid him to appear?

See, I do understand where you're coming from. I disagree with you, probably 99%, but I understand. But when you use Billy Bragg as an example of someone who's swayed by money... sorry AOG, short of the Levellers you couldn't have picked a worse example.

"Since both the EDL and the UAF held rallies in the city, why was it thousands of people showed their opposition only to the EDL?"

Here's why:

and this:

But the real killer is this:

Imagine getting support from a David Icke forum.

David Icke!!!

Yeah - the Billy Bragg reference was a terrible mistake. You literally couldn't pick anyone else who is less about money and more about an honourable man.

Remember he protested against the BNP using his music on one of their fund-raising albums?

Why would someone who's money-oriented do that?
"why was it thousands of people showed their opposition only to the EDL?"

At the risk of stating the obvious: because thousands object to the EDL, and only a few racists and nutters support them.
The planning and organisation for the One Leicester peace event began months ago, probably before the EDL had even realised the city existed. It's been a bigger event than expected purely because many of us were so angry about having our relatively peaceful and harmonious city invaded by a bunch of mindless thugs just looking for an excuse to hit someone or cause a bit of damage. We do not take kindly to people who have nothing whatsoever to do with this city telling who can and cannot come to live here. That's for us to decide - peacefully!

People have come to this city to live from all over the world for thousands of years, from the Romans, through the Saxons, Jews, Irish, Asians and now the Eastern Europeans. We all get all along pretty well, give or take a few nutters and meat-heads, and we look upon the population diversity as one of the city's strengths. That the EDL/UAF could only muster a couple of thousand between the two groups in a city with a population of around 300k, and that small number made up of largely 'outside' troops, says something about how most of us feel about them.

And for your information, Billy is a regular visitor to Leicester and is 100% genuine in his feelings for the city. My husband has worked with him here and will confirm this. I don't know how much we paid him to appear on this occasion, but going on what various artists have been paid in the past for similar events, it certainly wasn't the thousands you seem to think.
Well, the truth's obvious, given the fact that there's a large Asian population in Leicester, and that the EDL is perceived to be a white, racist organisation, it's no surprise that the local media should choose to rail against the would be bad guys rather than the local group, is it?
BTW AOG, I admired your avatar so much, I've got myself a similar one :-)
Love your avatar! I used to collect the labels from the marmalade jars in the days of innocence and wore the badges on my school blazer. By the way, who or what are the UAF?

"Events included a performance from musician Billy Bragg." - I object to calling Billy Bragg a musician!! Saw him at Milton Keynes Bowl in the 80s... he was f awful!!

"In the days of innocence" that just about sums it up, that is what certain groups are fighting for, a return to the days when we didn't have to look over our shoulders before we spoke.

The days before we daily had to look into our book of banned words before we wrote or spoke, I wonder how long will it be before we can no longer utter the letter certain words begin with, in case it offends someone or other?

Those days of innocence when a child could hug & love their favourite "Golly" without calls for it to be banned, how long before rojah's Avatar offends someone?

What are the UAF?

A group of Far-Left Communist thugs.
...But who are the real Fascists,Novo?...."The creatures outside looked from pig to man,and from man to pig,and from pig to man again;but already it was impossible to say which was which"

A typical example of over exaggeration used by some to get a point across.

My question,
I wonder how much the council paid him to appear?

Your answer
/// it certainly wasn't the thousands you seem to think.///

Even if you could read my mind, I think 'Thousands' would be an over exaggeration.
UAF - a group of far left thugs

Like David Cameron who was a signatory to their founding statement

I think the originators of your links have a vested interest.

This is one by the BBC.on the Bolton demonstration.
http://tinyurl.com/ylywx4g

/// Sixty-seven people were arrested, including the UAF protest organiser on suspicion of conspiracy to commit violent disorder, police said. ///

Prior to the Bolton demonstration,
The EDL published a notice on its website with information about the demonstration.

/// It said that supporters would only protest peacefully and they were aiming to have "zero arrests".///

/// EDL supporters were warned not to react to any goading from other parties, but to smile and give the V for victory sign. ///

/// The EDL had postponed its protest, which was due to take place on 6 March, because they did not want it to clash with the timing of the Hindu festival, Holi. ///

This one by The Manchester Evening News.
http://tinyurl.com/2derpny

/// Police have accused anti-fascist campaigners of deliberately causing trouble during the protest.///

/// A senior police chief said members of the Unite Against Fascism group turned their frustrations on officers during the demonstration. ///

/// Police were forced to step in when several hundred UAF campaigners tried to enter the EDL area of the square.///

Puts things more into perspective, don't you think?

Can't argue against that jake, always had my doubts about Cameron, he will side with anyone to try and gain popularity.
Question Author
Pay attention Dave, the 67 arrested were at the Bolton demonstration, as I so clearly pointed out.
AOG - whatever, you give the impression that you think Billy was paid a lot of money to appear. Artists have indeed been paid thousands to appear here in the past - I know because I've seen it change hands, and I've seen copies of the contracts - so it wasn't an exaggeration. But Billy's not exactly an expensive artist and people happen to like him - it's why he always sells out when he plays De Montfort Hall.

The remains that both sides of the demonstration are nothing but a bunch of frustrated para-thugs who can't get away with calling themselves football fans anymore. And quite simply, they're not welcome here.
