Can anyone explain why certain tv shows look so "different"? For example, the studio scenes in "The Gadget Show" look really "cheap", but other parts of the show look like "normal" tv. What are they doing to make it look different?

Maybe because they've blown their entire budget on the prizes for their competitions they can't afford a decent set?
the money they get from the entrants entering the competition via the text mobiles etc far exceeds the entire cost of the prizes BOO
I don't watch the show, so don't know for sure, but you mention the studio scenes look different to the rest, so I am guessing the rest is location work. It could be the difference in the different types of cameras they are using.
