When reading novels they sometimes have three stars at the bottom of a page or sometimes in the middle what do these mean?

I think it denotes the end of a paragraph that has ended at the bottom of the page.

I think it usually marks a break in time, or a movement on to another theme.

yes - it's like a chapter break, but not so emphatic.

I think the stars indicate like a diffrent time. Like the following day or in the next hour.
