If you were going to have only one piece of fitness equipment in your home what would it be? I want to get one piece of gym equipment, whether it be a rowing machine, cross trainer weights etc. Just wondering which single piece would give the best all round exercise. Any ideas or recommendations?

For me it would be a treadmill..
I have an exercise bike due to space constraints. If I had more room I would prefer a cross trainer though.
If you can only have one, then I would not have a machine for endurance work. You can do endurance work with a pair of running shoes, or a mountain bike.

I'd have a machine for resistance work, and the most versatile piece of equipment for that (in terms of variety of possible exercises for different body parts) is the Cable Machine.

The problems with jogging or riding a mountain bike for me would be due to my disability. I cannot just sit or lie down when needed if out and about.lol
An exercise bike is really the only thing I can do to keep my joints mobile and provide any sort of exercise whatsoever.

Anyone who is physically fit and healthy though should try and do some sort of outdoor exercise, even if it is just a brisk walk every day.
Over the years we have had a rowing machine, multigym and treadmill, all of which were used a little and then got rid off. We now have a cross trainer which makes a great clothes horse! Husband always promises to turn the garage into a gym, I'll believe that when I see it! Think a 'fitness fairy' with a magic wand would be as much use!

Visit an excercise shop and try things out or visit a local gym for an afternoon with a trainer who will help you chose what is suitable for you. Don't spend money unless you know you are going to use it.

I was leaning toward a cross trainer to be honest, when I used to got to the gym that was my preferred equipment.
Save your money and buy some free weights, a bike and a decent pair of running shoes. Get out in the fresh air (in all weathers) and burn the calories with the bike or shoes, then get back and tone up with the free weights.
