I'm sure this has come up before but don't remember the answer. I have foolishly burnt a saucepan (not non-stick) - forgot to turn flame down - now bottom of pan is black. Have soaked and scrubbed (wot an interesting life I lead) - slight improvement only. Any magic tricks please?

The best way to clean burnt on enamel is to let it soak overnight. Do not scrub pot with anything coarse otherwise the enamel could become scratched.
white vinegar - leave to soak overnight!
If it is a proper enamel pan then oven cleaner should do it. I always use 'Oven Mate' for bad situations. This can be had from Lakeland.
Boil some rhubarb in it comes up a treat.
enamel pot, worth trying to save, were you cooking scrambled eggs ?

Brilliant! Some more ideas. Thank you. Anne - I was just cooking some potatoes, with some carrots/green beans on top in steamer bit - in kitchen all the time while it boiled away merrily, and noticed a funny scorching smell but just didn't twig....
