Normal.dot in word 2000

How can I get to Normal.dot to put it [or a shortcut to it] on my desktop, in order that I can modify the defaults. I've tried search and drag to the worktop, but this will only open doc 1 which, if I alter it, asks me to save as a new document. Help. Thank you.
