Since our new neighbours moved in about a year ago, I think there is a smell of cigarette smoke in our house all the time. OH cant smell it though but it seems to be in the lounge and bedrooms and quite strong. I know that the neighbours do smoke, so is it possible the smoke could permeate through the walls as there are times when all the doors and windows are closed. Its so annoying when you dont smoke yourself

I find it very hard to believe that the smell would drift downwards through their floor, through any gaps in the walls (which shouldn't be there) and then up through your flooring, it would be more likely to leave through any airbricks you have below floor level so check your airbricks are clear just in case, this might actually solve the problem.
Just another thought, Chuckfickens asked if you have any teenage kids, obviously that's an area to explore, but don't forget, even if your kids deny smoking, they and their clothes will smell of smoke even if they are hanging round with a gang of kids who do. I know this from personal experience. Our teenage daughter was coming home stinking of smoke yet she still swore it was just her friends who were smoking. Also, when our kids were young we used to take them to our mam's for a night, and when we brought them home we had to wash every bit of clothing and bedding to get rid of the smell!
Good luck finding the source!
In the days when we could, I worked in a small office with two smokers, and they could never understand how objectionable I found the smell and the smoke lefting wifting up from the butts in the ashtrays. It was only after one of them stopped that she realised herself that it is a really unpleasant and clinging smell.
why dont you drill a hole near the floor and insert a pipe containing gas so when they light up poof the smell will be gone
I haven't read all the posts, but having experienced something similar I will suggest.... chinmney flue leakage. Our new (and lovely) neighbours have made their fireplace into a 'feature' with pebbles and candles. Looks lovely, does nowt. However I can smell their fag ash upstairs at times. I believe it is percolating thru the wreckage of the flue liner, then thru brickwork, and thence chez nous.
I would much rather this, now that I realise the consequence of their predecessors - a lovely retired couple, who had a gas fire. Therefore, all the fumes from this were working into our upstairs. a wonder we ever awoke.
A few years back we had our flue liner replaced So we had been mutually poisonng our neighbours I suppose.
*buddy keyboard* flue lining was in tatters
