googled the question no clear answer though can anyone help?

Asteroids are minor planets, orbiting the sun, mostly between Mars and Jupiter.
A meteoroid is a smaller rock, sand to pebble to boulder size anywhrer around the Sun.
A meteor is the streak of light( shooting star) seen when a meteoroid strikes the upper atmosphere.
A meteorite is a rock which survives the fall through the air to reach the ground.
Hunters search for these and then sell them, or bits of them to collectors.
Are you thinking of the Tunguska event by any chance?

Not that likely to actually have been an asteroid as there's no crater - although it is possible - could have been a comet
