My partner seems to be paying FAR too much tax but because hes a lazy bum he hasnt rang up to check hes on the right tax code! I obviously cant do it for him but i want to know, im pretty sure he is on the wrong code, how do we do a tax rebate and claim back the tax he has wrongly paid? is there a form online that you can print off and send?

Thanks

If his wages are paid using software such as sage then he will get a rebate in his pay packet when they change his tax code on their system.

What code is he on?

If its automatic will the work place tell him this in a letter that hes had some money back?

His code is 647L

For a few months his tax was like £130 then all of a sudden £500! I dont get it :-S

hes been there over 9 months now and has a proper contract, he works alternate days and nights each week and works 10-12 hour shifts 4-5 days a week depending sometimes only 7 hours a day

Thanks

No they won't bother with a letter. It'll be explained on his wage slip in the tax part..

It'll say - xxx....and his net pay will be higher.

this tax code ive said on here, is that a normal code for everyone then?

Also....that's not the wrong tax code. So there must be some other mistake.
Yes...
Question Author
i wonder why it jumped up from so little to so much then :S
Don't know. It could be a mistake. He'll need to take his payslips to payroll.
hes working 40+ hours a week then. if so then £100 a month tax seems very low
did he have a period of unemployment before? could he have been due a rebate when he started this job?
Was he working before he started at this place? If not he may have had unused allowances from earlier in the 2009/10 tax year, giving him lower tax for the first couple of months.
Question Author
he was unemployed for about a month and before this he worked but not alot of hours i just think £500 seems alot of money? for someone whose on a min wage income
Possibly:

Last tax year he will have had a full tax allowance but paid very little tax as he worked for only part of it

This year he still has a full allowance but is also earning for the whole year so will pay more tax.
i have a similar tax code (663L) and earn 32.5k. I pay approx 400 pm tax and approx 200 NI
He needs to contact his/any tax office for an explanation, but my guess is it's part of a catching up process
