Basically, it was dark last night and I went to plug my charger into my laptop, but instead of putting it in the right place I shoved it into a USB port in the back. Because I'm an idiot.
Anyway, it pinged and went off and smelled strongly like burning. So I'm guessing it's not good?
Its completely dead now, won't turn on or anything. Is there ANY way this is fixable?

I would agree that it is the motherboard. though I'm surprised that forcing the power into a USB socket done that much damage, pretty much all laptop power supplies supply the + in the centre of the connector, so all it should have done is shorted the USB 5v to ground.

to get the pictures of the drive either take it into a local PC shop (I would not recommend PC world) and they will do it for you, or, again, take it to local PC shop and tell them you would like to buy a USB caddy for a hard drive and ask them if they will remove the drive from the laptop and fit it into the caddy for you. you can then just plug the drive into yoour new computer and copy the stuff off it. you will then be left with a hard drive in a USB caddy you can use for other stuff.

I'm amazed that it's caused so much damage. My laptop had been on for a while though and was stupidly hot, and it did smell like burning after it had shut itself down.

thanks for all the replies everybody, you've been very helpful :)
These things don't last forever:

That's why backups are so important...

I just looked and it was the ethernet port I plugged it into. Not good. I rang a local place and the man quoted £68 if he doesn't have to get the parts in, but I suspect he will and it'll end up being loads more.
