Surely if u choose to have children you choose to look after them not expect the goverment to pay you to pay someone else to look after them so you can go back to work...and dont come back with the argument that families need two earners to survive...yes if you want two or three holidays a year or a large house, but not if you just want to enjoy your family and bring the children up not to be greedy and think they can have it all....

I'm with you all the way on this tillyh345.

and as for Coobeastie ....you say 'Our income fell by around 20k when we went part time.' ......oh for a combined wage of 20K!....that would have been bl88dy marvellous....our three children were brought up on considerably less than that a year and I stayed home to look after all three of them.

I get very annoyed when people complain that they have trouble managing on X amount of money. You cut your suit according to your cloth, or should I say that you SHOULD cut your suit etc.

No-one is forced to have a child or children these days....and as for the comment in a posting above saying something along the lines of....sometimes children come along as a consequence of casual sex......well, all I can say is that these people probably have a brain cell or two and can work out that male plus female plus sexual intercourse sometimes equals a child........the attitude of the person who talked about casual sex, well it makes me worry for their sanity!

I feel that it is a symptom of many that they do not grasp the concept of respnsibility.
I don no....yes its very easy to compare wages from years past with modern wages.

The average wage in the uk for 2009 was 25k, The average wage in the 80's was 6k sounds like a big difference but in real terms that 6k would be worth around 19k in todays money...not much of a difference is it.
Coobeastie....

we brought all 3 of our children on considerably less than the average wage that prevailed at the time.

there is no way I would have had children and then paid someone else to care for them. our children, our responsibility.
Well thats why we went part time so we could bring out daughter up, but then she also benefits from meeting other adults and children on the 2 days that she is at nursery.

I agree whole heartedly if we're talking about people who have children and then have them cared for exclusively by hired help but then that would tend to be a minority of the super rich.

I just don't agree with the assumption that if you both work full time you are somehow bad parents or only doing it for big houses etc. Being at home doesn't necessarily mean that you are a great parent.
