Cyclist should thay take a test

Do you think that cyclist should have to pass a theory test and a off the road bike test before they are allowed out on the road ?.

big generilisation there, there are a minority of drivers who "drive like maniacs" the majority follow the road rules, If cyclists want to use the same stretches of road then its fair to say that they should be educated to the road rules for a cyclist for their own safety and the safety of other road users.

The number of cyclists we have here who ride on the pavement (especially as we have a one way system round the town and they want to go the other way) - or ride straight across red lights including turning right at junctions against the lights - I would say that all cyclists need some sort of permit, and also third party insurance, in case they cause accidents, same as we have to in cars.

Yes they should be made to take a test - and they should all fail! My trouble's a cyclist and she's lethal - no road sense at all - in fact, just "no sense"!!!!(except for marrying me, that is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

I think the comment about them needing insurance is a good one, I have been hit by a cyclist on the pavement in a town centre and one hit a friends car the cyclist was going agauinst the flow of traffic in a one way system...but they would need some form of registration plate or visible badge for this to work

hmm, tricky one, I do see the advantages but if someone could both drive and ride a bike and they chose biking because it was cheaper they may then be put off by the bother of taking a test and having to pay for it, which could ulitmately mean more cars on the roads which can't be good. Also, where would you draw the line, what about people who ride horses along the sides of the road, should they be tested first?

even with a cycling road safety test sophie, cycling will remain to be the cheapest way to get about (other than walking of course)

i passed my cycle test when i was in primary school don't know if i should take another one was about 20 years ago now

It's really expensive atm isn't it? What are the chances of the cost of fuel going down at all?

Yes riders should be tested. The BHS do a test called Riding and Road Safety but it isn't compulsory which i think it should be, also insurance and for cyclists. I used to ride and the stables I went to expected all their clients/students to do the test. You were limited where you could ride till you had passed it.

I think you dont have to pass theory test to ride cycle on the road.

but you have to follow some rules and regulation at the time of riding cycle on the road like You should wear a cycle helmet.
Wear proper clothing just avoid clothes which may get tangled in the chain, or in a wheel or may obscure your lights etc
